2014-11-30 Poe Road Passerines

Common Ground-Dove - Columbina passerina
I was able to use my vehicle as a *blind* to capture these shy birds at Poe Road, Salton Sea NWR. Imperial County, Southern California.

My past stops at Poe Road on the southwestern shore of the Salton Sea have yielded worthwhile bird encounters. On this visit at the end of November 2014, I focused on birds at the edge the thick mesquite thickets several hundred yards from the current shore of the receding sea. In October 2011, I spent the night camped near this location and photographed all three local rails here; Sora, Virginia, and Clapper Rails. I’ve also met the Least Bittern here.

Depending on the season and dumb luck, one might meet high numbers of birds here. On this visit I found Common Ground-Dove, Black-Tailed Gnatcatcher, Yellow-Rumped Warbler, Verdin, Red-Tailed Hawk, White-Crowned Sparrow.
