SurfBird - Aphriza virgata
SurfBird – Aphriza virgata

I needed to get out, and I’d heard through the grapevine that Red-Throated Loons were present at the Oceanside Harbor channel. I pulled into the parking area at sunrise and as soon as I arrived at the rip-rap jetty I could see several of these birds who breed in the very high arctic, but they were all frustratingly at the far side of the channel about 1000′ away. I eventually parked myself at the north end of the jetty and waited for the universe to offer its gifts. Nearly 3 hours later the universe rewarded me when my target bird, the Red-Throated Loon, swam by. It was a spectacular morning. It was a spectacular morning.

Images in this set include Red-Throated Loon, Brown Pelican, Double-Crested Cormorant and SurfBird.
