Sandhill Crane

(Grus canadensis)

Description:

Here we see a crane family, with the hatch-year bird in the middle. The cranes (both Lesser and Greater Sandhills) were tolerant of people here because many folks in the neighborhood fed them corn. Corrales NM is a community a few miles north of Albuquerque, with several open fields where Sandhill Cranes have found reliable food supplied by local residents. Jerry and I spent a few hours getting aquainted with them on Wednesday.
