Tule Elk

(Cervus canadensis nannodes)

Description:

Tule Elk once numbered as high as 500,000 in population. In the 1870s they were believed to be extirpated. In 1874–1875 a single breeding pair was discovered in the tule marshes in the southern San Joaquin Valley. Conservation measures taken in the 1970s has revived the population to over 4000. The animals pictured were at the San Luis NWR, near Los Banos, California 2011-12-28.
