Memories of Red Rock Feedlot

Detour at Red Rock, Arizona
Finding the feedlot outside of Red Rock, Arizona.

Red Rock Arizona is in Pinal County, located off the I-10 between Picacho and Marana. There is a feedlot two miles east of town that sometimes hosts rare doves and other birds. Twice I’ve visited here. Each time, I was returning home after photo expeditions in southern Arizona. My first visit was in late fall (2008-11-29), and I passed by again in the jaws of summer (2013-08-29).

Cattle feedlots are not the most pleasant places to meet birds. They smell bad and there is little ‘natural’ about them. But the feed for the livestock can attract seed-eating birds, and the flying bugs that hang out in the manure attract insect eaters.

I had seen reports of Ruddy Doves at this feedlot in the past and the faint hope of meeting this species lured me in for a visit. Alas, in this quest, I failed. Even so, I found the time spent with the avian community here was worthwhile.

The birds I met here during the brief time I spent on each visit were White-Winged Dove, Yellow-Headed Blackbird, Killdeer, Brown-Headed Cowbird, and Eurasian Collared-Dove.
