Memories of the San Luis Rey Rivermouth

Red-Necked Phalarope – Phalaropus lobatus

I love visiting locations where streams and rivers meet the ocean. These places where freshwater and saltwater meet have the potential for life to thrive. Sadly, in San Diego County, very little water in our streams freely flows into the ocean. When last I visited the San Luis Rey Rivermouth, it was damned with beach sand. Yet the water that pooled up there seemed to attract an interesting collection of waterfowl and shorebirds.

From a photographer’s perspective, there is a lot to like about this location’s potential. Sidewalks and walkways surround the pools of water on the north, east, and southern borders. From there, a patient photographer can find a suitable perch from which to study the birds below without pressuring them to retreat. And during spring or fall migration, one might get lucky and meet some unexpected travelers, like the juvenile Red-Necked Phalaropes I found on 2014-09-23.
