Memories of the Tijuana River Valley

The Tijuana River Valley holds a special place in the hearts of the San Diego birding community. Here probably have been the scene of more ‘rarity’ findings than any other location in the county. None other than the venerable Guy McCaskie brought the world’s attention to this place very early in his long career.

The region measures nearly two miles north-to-south, and over four miles east-to-west. With several ‘hot-spots’ within its boundaries, it might be better to enjoy birding at one or two locations within the area on each visit. In fact, locations such as the Bird and Butterfly Garden, Border Field, and Dairy Mart Ponds, have more detailed information described here on the website.

But these popular destinations are not the only places to encounter interesting birds. The ‘Sod Fields’ at the eastern extreme of the valley often produce long-distance sightings for folks with high-powered spotting scopes. There are miles of trails weaving through the valley. Any of these might produce an unusual or just fun bird encounter. At the western boundary, where endangered and threatened terns and plovers nest, one might meet these birds on the beach. And if one gazes west, out over the waves, another world of possibilities awaits.
