Memories of Yellowstone

American Bison - Bison bison
Moms and their babies are always good for that “Ah” moment. It was the friskiness of these “Red Dogs” (or Bison calves) that caught my attention along the Madison River a few miles from the west entrance of Yellowstone National Park.

To say Yellowstone Park is big is an understatement. I have paid visits in 2001, 2015, and 2022. Yet, I don’t believe I’ve scratched the surface of the opportunities possible to capture nature with my camera.

In 2001, I was using film cameras. My attention back then was on general nature subjects. My focus on bird-life had barely begun. It would take me until 2003 before I committed to the digital discipline. And by then, bird photography was taking a hold of me.

My explorations in 2015 were merely an abbreviated visit with a day-trip during a week-long stay in Jackson. I drove away from Jackson through the park, but crowds do not entice me to linger. So I continued north, intent on spending time with an old pal in Montana’s Bitterroot Valley near Stevensville.

My 2022 excursion through the park was only slightly more leisurely. After an 8-day stay with a friend in Teton National Park, I spent two days camped at Madison Campground, before winding my way out the east gate near Cody. There were the usual crowds present, and again, I was happy to leave them behind. Not long after I left the park, there were unprecedented floods so extreme, the park was closed to all visitors.
