I left Mount Carmel Junction and headed north on Highway US-89. It’s about a three-hour drive into Bicknell Utah, and then but a few minutes south to what the locals call “Bicknell Bottoms”. Of course I found stuff along the road that I had to stop and stare at. The most compelling stop I made on this leg was at Otter Creek and Otter Creek Reservoir near Antimony Utah. My first stop in this area was at a bridge where Barn and Cliff Swallows abounded. I tried to capture some in-flight images, but did not get the results I was hoping for. The lower reservoir had some lovely birds, the best being a Common Loon that allowed me a fairly close approach. Below the dam on an outflow pond I found several Red-Breasted Mergansers that posed fairly near, though the lighting for each of these birds was a bit harsh.
Bicknell Bottoms, which I’ll write more about in the next post, had several birds that were fun including Marsh Wrens, Sora, Virginia Rails, Red-Winged and Yellow-Headed Blackbirds, Tree and Cliff Swallows, Chipping and Savannah Sparrows.
