Travel and birding for me go hand-in-hand. I nearly always drive when I venture across North America, and I pack my camera gear with me. Some of my expeditions cover 10,000 or even 12,000 miles. One reason I hate flying is knowing that the faster you go, the less you see. Tethered to the ground, I like to take my time by taking roads less traveled. These voyages can last three, four, or five months. When I travel like this, I’m often winging it. I usually have some far away place on my radar, but I am always looking for favorable places to meet the local birds.
