American White Ibis
Eudocimus albus

The American White Ibis is a bird of the tropics. We find them north to the deep south in the USA, the Caribbean islands, Central America, and the Caribbean and northwest coasts of South America. They forage on small aquatic prey and find their food more by feel than by sight.
Some authorities believe these birds are the same species as the Scarlet Ibis (Eudocimus ruber). Where their ranges overlap, they will interbreed. Studies show that concentrations of methylmercury from pollution (untreated effluent) have caused a drop in the reproduction of Ibis.
These birds are seldom idle. Studies show that on an average day they forage for ten and a half hours, fly for 45 minutes, and split 13 hours between nesting, preening, and roosting. Early ornithologists believed the brown juvenile ibis were of a separate species, and called them the Brown Curlew.
Though not all authorities agree, many recognise two subspecies of American White Ibis:
- E. a. albus is the white form of this species that live north of Panama.
- E. a. ruber or Scarlet Ibis lives in South America.
To date, all my encounters with White Ibis have been on the gulf coast of Texas. I have found them from Lower Rio Grande Valley to High Island on to Bolivar Peninsula northeast of Galveston. My introduction to this species came during my first trip to Aransas NWR. An early morning formation flew in low just overhead while I was searching for Whooping Cranes. The Ibis flock made a nice consolation prize for the cranes that remained too distant for a satisfying visit.

Description: This White Ibis sailed over us while we were working on one of the low nesting islands on the bay. On Wednesday (2021-03-03) I drove from Aransas NWR to Galveston. I pulled off the freeway at Tiki Island, where it was my good fortune to meet a Coast Warden for Texas Audubon, as he was loading his boat onto its trailer. He was generous enough to offer to take me with him on his rounds to monitor nesting islands in West Bay the next day. |

Description: White Ibis could probe the mud more deeply than the other bird on this marsh, and seemed to be quite happy doing so. Hurricane Harvey, in 2017, hit Port Aransas (Texas) hard. There are wetlands that the South Padre Island Convention Centre (free access) and the Birding & Nature Center (admission fee required) share. Description: When first I sat down to shoot these ibis feeding in the shallows, they were too far for good shots. I remained still, and the flock moved closer. I finally got my chance to visit Santa Ana National Wildlife Reserve this Sunday. American White Ibis(Eudocimus albus) |
|
Description: White Ibis here were plentiful, and occasionally bold. Hunter Lane is at the far side of the park, two miles from the Resaca de la Palma Visitor Center. It is the most reliable place in the reserve to find standing water, and my favorite place to enjoy birds. |

Description: White Ibis could probe the mud more deeply than the other bird here and seemed to be quite happy doing so. Hurricane Harvey, in 2017, hit Port Aransas (Texas) hard. The beginning stages of rebuilding the Port Aransas Nature Center’s boardwalk began with a 1500' footpath, but there are plans to extend it to about three miles. |

Description: When first I sat down to shoot these ibis feeding in the shallows, they were too far for good shots. I remained still, and the flock moved closer. I finally got my chance to visit Santa Ana National Wildlife Reserve this Sunday. I’ve wanted to explore there since my first trip to Texas in the Spring of 2020, but with the global pandemic, it was one of several locations that shut their doors to all visitors while I was here last spring. |

Description: White Ibis were another species I met at the Nature Center I did not see well at the Convention Centre. There are wetlands that the South Padre Island Convention Centre (free access) and the Birding & Nature Center (admission fee required) share. My previous visits to the wetlands had been to the Convention Centre. On this day I would find out why folks pay money to see the marsh, when there is free access next door. |
