Laysan Albatross

Range Map
Phoebastria immutabilis

Like all albatrosses, these birds are capable of long distance travel. Most of these birds breed on islands in the Hawaiian archipelago, but in recent years they have colonized islands off the coast of Baja California.

Despite their ever-expanding range, no genetic variations among the various breeding populations of Laysan Albatross have been detected, and taxonomists regard them as monotypic (there are no subspecies).

In 2017, while I participated on a scientific expedition, we found colonies of Laysan Albatross nesting on the islands of the Revillagigedos in Mexican waters. On Isla San Benedicto I witnessed adults on eggs, adults with chicks, and even a pair-bonding and a baby-feeding episode. Later, on Isla Clarion, we found them again in loose colonies, and while I saw pair-bonding ceremonies there, I did not see any eggs or chicks on our visit to this island, though some birds may have been sitting on eggs.
