Socorro Parakeet

Psittacara brevipes

Some ornithologists consider these a subspecies of the Green Parakeet (Psittacara holochlorus brevipes). But many researchers now accept it as a full species.

These birds are endangered. The population appears to be dwindling. Overgrazing by sheep has been a problem in the past, but they have eradicated the sheep. There remains, however, a feral cat population which poses a threat to these birds, as well as other endemics on the island.

There are no recognised subspecies of Socorro Parakeet (i.e. they are monotypic).

When I visited Isla Socorro in 2017, we found Socorro Parakeets on the upper slopes of the volcano that formed the island (Mount Evermann). There, in the cloud forests, they are endemic.
