Memories of 2005 at Dog Lake – BC, Canada

My earliest adventure in Canada was while traveling to Alaska. Late in May-2005, I drove out of Idaho and crossed over the border at Kingsgate Port of Entry. After driving 156 miles north and falling in love with the amazing scenery in British Columbia along the Kootenay Highway (BC-95), I found a campground called McLeod Meadows, and settled in for the night. With signage describing a trail to Dog Lake, this seemed like a worthwhile place for exploring.

There were many birds new to me right there in camp, so I took advantage of the opportunity to gather images, before retiring for the night. The next morning, I followed the gently sloping trail for 1.75 miles to reach Dog Lake. My favorite encounter there was meeting a pair of Common Loons. These were my first. There is something special about first meetings with birds. Those memories are often lasting ones.

Off to a great start on my way to Alaska, the Kootenay River Valley was a great host. I enjoyed capturing images of Columbian Ground Squirrels, Red-Breasted Nuthatches, Ruby-Crowned Kinglets, Slate-Colored Dark-Eyed Juncos, American Robins, and the aforementioned Common Loons.
