Memories of Lake Saskatoon & Little Lake

Least Chipmunk – Tamias minimus – Little Lake, Alberta, Canada.

Saskatoon Island Provincial Park rests between Little Lake and Saskatoon Lake about 12 miles west of Grande Prairie in Alberta, Canada. I’ve described Crystal Lake in Grande Prairie elsewhere on my blog. But this account is about my time in the region during my first expedition through Canada.

Fun fact: When one is new to bird photography, the odds of meeting birds for the first time can be quite high. In 2005, and traveling to Alaska, I was still pretty green, and so there were many such ‘first meetings’ for me. My visit to Little Lake and Saskatoon Lake in June-2005 rewarded me with several such meetings. Aside from the new insects and rodents that captured my attention, I met the Eastern Kingbird, Yellow-Shafted Northern Flicker, Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker, Baltimore Oriole, Clay-Colored Sparrow, Sora, and Least Flycatcher for the first time there.

I passed through this region again in 2022. But eager to reach other destinations, I did not spend much time here on that expedition.
