Memories of Lake Poway

Map – Lake Poway

I don’t always bring a camera with me when I visit Lake Poway. Only 7.5 miles from my home, I find its peace and serenity soothes me and heals my soul. If not on a weekend, when families flock here for picnicking, playing games, or fishing, I have found it easy to find a shady bench overlooking the lake from the park’s overlooks. If the weather is compatible, I may hike or bike the trails that weave their way through the chaparral-covered slopes surrounding the lake.

When I was in school, this basin was part of the wild back-country that has nearly disappeared from San Diego County. The lake was constructed between 1970 and 1972, and stores the drinking-water supply for the City of Poway.

Despite the ‘rearranged’ habitat, wildlife meetings can still be enjoyed here. The birds I have photographed include American Yellow Warblers, Brewer’s Blackbirds, Bushtits, American Crows, Lark Sparrows, Black Phoebes, Bullock’s Orioles, Black-Crowned Night-Herons, House Wrens, Rufous-Crowned Sparrows, Turkey Vultures, Lesser Goldfinches, and Mallards. But these are not the limit of species one might encounter here.
