Memories of Poway Pond

Map – Poway Pond

Very near my home is Poway Pond. Actually, there are two ponds. One is publicly owned, while the other is privately owned. The privately owned pond is now named “Taylor Pond”. But when I moved to Poway in 1961, we called both ponds “Gegax’s Ponds”, so named for the man who constructed them next to Beeler Creek, Frank L. Gegax (pronounced GeeJax).

Today, Ken Taylor and his family operate an AirBnb on their property, which guests seem to enjoy very much. From the public access, one can view waterfowl on Taylor Pond, but the views of the birds spending time on Poway Pond is less obstructed.

I enjoy participating each year in the “Christmas Bird Count”. Poway lies within the Rancho Santa Fe Circle, and my friend Kirsten and I tour nearby places where we’ve had luck finding species. Places such as Old Poway Park, Community Park, and the Poway Ponds are locations we’ve counted on to catch some of the hard-to-find birds.
