Eastern Cottontails and their cousins, the Desert Cottontail, both wander the tralis and thickets at the National Butterfly Center.

This bunny looks similar to our Desert Cottontail in the west, but it wasn’t a part of our target species for the contest. As part of The Great Texas Birding Classic, The National Butterfly Center held a “Big Sit” event on Sunday. They invited me to join the team, and in between shifts, I walked the grounds in search of photo opportunities.

These Eastern Cottontails weren't as tame as I've seen the Desert Cottontails in Southern California. The camp where I spent April in Brownsville, Texas has a "Reseca" or Oxbow lake on its border, Several feeder stations, with tall trees and grassy areas.
