Texan Hooded Orioles
Icterus cucullatus
The Hooded Oriole is fond of nesting in palm trees. Winters are mostly spent on the Pacific coast of southern Mexico and summers in northern Mexico and just over the border in the USA and much of coastal California. One subspecies breeds in southern Texas, and in 2020 when I met them, I was surprised how their softer calls contrasted with the sharp whistling calls of the birds I’d met in California.

Description: Hooded Orioles have a slightly decurved bill, and to a lesser extent so do Orchard Orioles. This bird could belong to the latter species. My second full day on South Padre Island, Texas was less birdy than my first day, but still I met some great birds. |

Description: I noticed Hooded Orioles in camp soon after I arrived. Their calls caught my attention, but the calls I heard were somewhat soft, and much quieter than the birds I'm used to from my southern California yard. I found these birds at a well stocked feeder in the RV camp where I stayed in Brownsville Texas. |
