Memories of Lake Wohlford

Map – Lake Wohlford

Prior to the construction of Lake Dixon, Lake Wohlford stored the water supply for the City of Escondido. This reservoir was constructed in 1895, and holds 3500 acre-feet of water. At an elevation of 1483 feet, it is perched more than 835 feet above the city it serves.

The road leading from below the lake forks just below the dam. The route to the right follows the southern shore for 1.5 miles through a thick oak grove and old homes. The route to the left circles below the dam and delivers travelers to the small community of Lake Wohlford, before passing the north shore of the lake, and connecting to Valley Center and Rancho Guejito.

Birds and other wildlife are attracted to such locations, and there are places on either side of the water, where folks can park, picnic, and fish. Alternatively, there are boat rentals on the north shore where one could choose to float along the shores and enjoy nature in style.
