Black-Throated Green Warbler

Setophaga virens

The Black-Throated Green Warbler spends summers in northeastern North America from central Alberta (Canada) to the Canadian North Atlantic coast, and in the USA’s Great Lakes states to New England, south through the Appalachians, and near the coast of North Carolina. They spend winters in Mexico, Central America, northern South America, and the Caribbean.

In the past, scientists viewed the population of Black-Throated Green Warblers breeding in the cypress swamps of the mid-Atlantic coast, a subspecies (S. v. waynei). That view is no longer held by mainstream scientists, and we now consider the species as monotypic (no subspecies).

Until recently, I had only met these birds in Texas during Spring migrations. But in the spring of 2023, I spent time in Ontario, on the shore of Lake Huron, and met these birds on their breeding grounds. I met so many passerines new to me on South Padre Island, it’s tough to call out favorites. This bird could certainly qualify.
